Joy Hides in Everything

by bryan maynard

Joy: moves from unmarked box to unmarked box,
from cell to cell. As rainwater, down into flowerbed.
As roses, up from ground.
Now it looks like a plate of rice and fish,
now a cliff covered with vines,
now a horse being saddled.
It hides within these,
till one day…it cracks them open

Love to all this day! Peace

A poem from the Persian mystic, Rumi. Anne Lamott says about this poem, “There is ecstasy in paying attention. You can get into a kind of Wordsworthian openness to the world, where you see in everything the essence of [love], a sign that [love] is implicit in all of creation.” (Bird by Bird, Anchor House, 100).
